Paint Chip Display
Fleisher Art Memorial Wind Challenge Recipient, Philadelphia, 2018
The Paint Chip Project, Found Object paint chip display case with lighting, printed paper paint chips, 6.5’ x 5’ x 3’, 2018
In this sculptural installation, Peoples' fabricates thousands of unique paint chip color samples seemingly from a big box retailer. Paint chip samples inspire home improvement projects by helping do-it-yourself home designers narrow down a color family and compare the nuances in warm and cool color palettes. These paint chip colors are fabricated and displayed by Peoples with the intended purpose of telling an intensely personal experience. When comfortable domesticity collides with life & death scenarios we become aware that our lives are in constant flux as we navigate the mundane and the monumental. Peoples uses memories of this poignant "day in a life" by employing theatrical aesthetics, dramatic lighting, pointed medical terminology and a vivid color palette; representing the real time manifestation of heightened color perception and visual stimuli experienced by the artist in the moment. The boundaries of familiarity are represented with an overload of text and gradient color to echo the feeling of a disorienting hospitalization and grief. Just as in any home improvement store these paint chips are free samples; gallery goers are encouraged to take one with them as a keepsake.
